Us, Them, We? A sonic perspective into contemporary Asian Tauiwi in Aotearoa

Sound Workshop

5-7pm, Friday 7 October

Hihi (1D12), Level D, Block 1

Massey University Wellington, Pukeahu Campus

Sound is integral to our culture as a mode that enables communication, awareness of our environment, and the expression of thoughts and emotions.

Us, Them, We? aimed to leverage the intrinsic nature of sound and music in culture and society to examine and reveal the nuances of Asian Tauiwi identity and its analogy with Māori, Pakeha, and Pasifika peoples in New Zealand today.

Through this sonic arts workshop led by Dr. Jon He (Te Rewa o Puanga - the School of Music and Creative Media Production) and alumni Agatha Lee, engaged participants with new tools and processes to express our ideas, questions, and reflections. The result was a new story, a new personal look, in the making of a collaborative digital mixtape/sound collage: an assemblage of voice, environmental sounds, sounds made by things, and music.

Limited capacity. Free and all welcome.
