Marc Conaco

We were excited to introduce Marc Conaco as our inaugural Asian Aotearoa Artist-in-residence at Toi Rauwhārangi College of Creative Arts for 2022. Marc Conaco is a queer Bisaya graphic designer, illustrator, zine-maker and amateur farmer based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa who's on an ongoing journey of decolonisation and indigenisation. An important part of his practice is rediscovering the rich pre-colonial culture and heritage of his Bisaya ancestors – a crucial part of his identity, absent in post-colonial Philippines. These themes are explored in his zine I am brown, I will not frown, while his artwork  Ang Paghinumdum sa Moropóro (Remembering the Pleiades) featured as part of this year’s national Matariki celebrations.

Marc says: “By learning who we are, we unlearn who our colonisers taught us to be. By knowing our histories we reclaim our identities. By remembering who we are, we reclaim our power.”
