Luise Fong

Luise Fong is a Malaysian-born New Zealand artist. In 1983 she studied textile design at Wellington Polytechnic (now Massey University CoCA) and graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland in 1989, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in print-making.

In 1994 Fong was the artist-in-residence at the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne and in the same year was the joint winner (with Bill Hammond) of the Visa Gold Art Award. Fong lived and worked in Melbourne (1995-2001) before her appointment as lecturer in painting at Elam School of Fine Arts (2001-2005).

Fong's work has been included in several important international exhibitions, including Cultural Safety: Contemporary Art from New Zealand (Frankfurter Kunstverein, 1995) and Trans/fusion: Hong Kong artists' exchange (Hong Kong Arts Centre and Auckland Art Gallery, 1996). Fong has held a number of residency positions including Govett-Brewster Art Gallery (1995), University of Canterbury (1999) and Colin McCahon House (2008). Her works are in the permanent collection of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. 

As part of the AAAH2018 Symposium @ Te Papa, Luise Fong was part of the Reimagining Paradise panel, in conversation with Yuk King Tan, Vera Mey and facilitated by Sarah Farrar.
