Alice Canton

Alice Canton is an Auckland-based performer, theatre-maker and teaching-artist. As a graduate of Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School (BPA) and University of Canterbury (BFA), Alice began her career as an improviser, MC, and corporate entertainer with the Court Theatre in 2003. Since then she has performed and taught throughout New Zealand, Australia and Asia, working with theatre companies including Red Leap Theatre, Auckland Theatre Company, Barbarian Productions, and Two Productions.

In 2011, Alice was supported by the Asia New Zealand Foundation to travel to Southeast Asia to study performance traditions in mask and shadow puppetry. This investigation continues to be an evolving area of research in her practice. Alice is founder of White_mess, a creative, open structure that facilitates the production of highly diverse theatre projects and collaborations. In 2017, her show OTHER [chinese] was named Best Show of 2017 (Metro Magazine) as well as winning the Excellence Award for Overall Production and the Hackman Cup for Most Original Production at the Auckland Theatre Awards. 

As part of AAAH2018 Symposium @ Te Papa, Canton was part of the panel for the Translations & Mutations Conversation with Lynda Chanwai-EarleRenee Liang facilitated by Julie Zhu.
